Better Precision Diagnostics Needed to Enable Routine Use of Genetically Modified Pig Organs for Transplant, Researchers Contend
In the nearly five years since the first genetically modified pig heart was transplanted into a living heart failure patient at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the field of xenotransplantation has made significant advances but remains in the research realm. The biggest challenge lies in detecting and reversing immune-driven injuries to the transplanted organ, including rejection and organ failure.

New UMSOM Research Shows Promising Results for Health Care Professionals Using Ketogenic Diet Therapy to Treat Mental Illness
Specialized high-fat, low carbohydrate diets, known as ketogenic metabolic therapy, are showing promising therapeutic benefits for certain mental illnesses in emerging research. Now, a new study from researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC) shows that an immersive training program can improve health care provider confidence in using a ketogenic dietary treatment plan for their patients.

Longtime Microbiology Chair, Vaccine Researcher, and Academic Leader James B. Kaper, PhD, Retires After Four Decades
James B. Kaper, PhD, the James and Carolyn Frenkil Distinguished Dean's Professor and Chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Microbiology and Immunology, will retire after more than 45 years of service, Dean Mark T. Gladwin announced today. Joao H. F. Pedra, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UMSOM, has been appointed Interim Department Chair after Dr. Kaper steps down on October 1; Dr. Kaper will fully retire from his faculty position on November 1.

UMSOM Summer Scholars Present Findings at Annual Student Research Forum
More than 160 student researchers presented their scientific findings at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's (UMSOM) annual Student Research Forum on July 24-25, showcasing research spanning cancer, neuroscience, infectious disease, public health, clinical care, and other pressing areas of medicine. Hosted by the Office of Student Research, the forum brought together students from across the University System of Maryland and partner institutions who spent the summer conducting mentored research with UMSOM faculty.

Mini-Medical School Returns to Connect Baltimore Residents with Trusted Health Education
The University of Maryland School of Medicine's (UMSOM) Mini-Medical School program returned this spring in a new location at the Village at Mondawmin in West Baltimore. It reconnected Baltimore residents of all ages with free health education led by UMSOM faculty members and introduced them to a new site adjacent to the future home of a planned community health hub at Mondawmin.
