New Study Finds Bacterial Infections Affect About 1 in 20 Hospitalized Adults With Firearm Injuries
A new study from researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) found that bacterial infections develop in approximately 5 percent of adults hospitalized with firearm injuries, with most infections occurring during the initial hospitalization rather than after patients return home. The findings were published Aug. 3 in JAMA Network Open as a research letter.

Clinicians should include nicotine-containing e-cigarettes alongside other evidence-based options for quitting cigarette smoking in conversations with adult patients, according to a new Special Communication published today in JAMA that is co-authored by a University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty member. The group of 24 tobacco treatment and addiction experts was convened by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) and was tasked with reviewing the latest literature to make recommendations directed at healthcare practitioners.

UM School of Medicine Establishes Two Endowed Professorships in Gene & Cell Therapy and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery through Maryland E-Nnovation Awards
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has been awarded $1.5 million in matching funds from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, to establish two new endowed professorships at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). Combined with $1.5 million in matching qualified funding from the university, the awards total $3 million and will support the recruitment of two physician-scientists to advance research and clinical innovation in gene and cell therapy and pediatric cardiac surgery, UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today.

Novelli, MD, MS, has been named Director of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Program in Sickle Cell Disease and a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology.
