UMSOM Summer Scholars Present Findings at Annual Student Research Forum
More than 160 student researchers presented their scientific findings at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's (UMSOM) annual Student Research Forum on July 24-25, showcasing research spanning cancer, neuroscience, infectious disease, public health, clinical care, and other pressing areas of medicine. Hosted by the Office of Student Research, the forum brought together students from across the University System of Maryland and partner institutions who spent the summer conducting mentored research with UMSOM faculty.

Mini-Medical School Returns to Connect Baltimore Residents with Trusted Health Education
The University of Maryland School of Medicine's (UMSOM) Mini-Medical School program returned this spring in a new location at the Village at Mondawmin in West Baltimore. It reconnected Baltimore residents of all ages with free health education led by UMSOM faculty members and introduced them to a new site adjacent to the future home of a planned community health hub at Mondawmin.

Climate Change Predicted to Drive Changes in Diarrheal Disease Prevalence in Several Countries in Africa
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) have identified key social and environmental factors that influence how climate change affects childhood diarrheal diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. An August study published in Nature Communications found that while rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are likely to alter disease risks, factors such as vaccination, access to transportation, and other indicators of socioeconomic resilience can help reduce the impact of climate-related health threats. A second study that did an initial analysis of the data was published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases in June.

New Study Finds Bacterial Infections Affect About 1 in 20 Hospitalized Adults With Firearm Injuries
A new study from researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) found that bacterial infections develop in approximately 5 percent of adults hospitalized with firearm injuries, with most infections occurring during the initial hospitalization rather than after patients return home. The findings were published Aug. 3 in JAMA Network Open as a research letter.

Clinicians should include nicotine-containing e-cigarettes alongside other evidence-based options for quitting cigarette smoking in conversations with adult patients, according to a new Special Communication published today in JAMA that is co-authored by a University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty member. The group of 24 tobacco treatment and addiction experts was convened by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) and was tasked with reviewing the latest literature to make recommendations directed at healthcare practitioners.

Nirali N. Shah, MD, MHSc, a nationally-recognized pediatric oncologist at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), has been appointed Professor and Director of the Pediatric/Adolescent and Young Adult Cell and Gene Therapy Program at University of Maryland School of Medicine. She will also serve as Associate Director for Translational Research for the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) .

UM School of Medicine Establishes Two Endowed Professorships in Gene & Cell Therapy and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery through Maryland E-Nnovation Awards
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has been awarded $1.5 million in matching funds from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, to establish two new endowed professorships at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). Combined with $1.5 million in matching qualified funding from the university, the awards total $3 million and will support the recruitment of two physician-scientists to advance research and clinical innovation in gene and cell therapy and pediatric cardiac surgery, UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today.
