UM School of Medicine Marks 10th Anniversary of Shock Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Center
The Shock Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), one of the first centers in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to studying the prevention and treatment of trauma, held a full-day symposium to mark the Research Center’s 10-year anniversary. Over the past decade, the world-class, multi-disciplinary research center has focused on traumatic brain injury, critical care, organ support, injury prevention, and surgical outcomes.

19th Annual Mini-Med School Celebrates Graduation
Since 2001, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has extended free health screenings and medical education to nearly 8,000 Marylanders of all ages, from elementary school students to their grandparents, through its Mini-Medical “Mini-Med” School programs.

UMSOM's Center for Integrative Medicine Set to Merge with UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center
Kevin Cullen, MD, Director of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), and University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, have announced that the UMSOM Center for Integrative Medicine has merged with the Cancer Center in order to increase cancer patients’ access to a number of complementary therapies and initiatives including yoga therapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy to help improve their symptoms, psychological outlook, and overall quality of life.

UM School of Medicine Establishes Endowed Professorship in Neurosurgery Through Private Gifts and Matching State Funds
University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that the UMSOM has been awarded matching funds from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce. The funds, when combined with private philanthropy, will enable UMSOM to establish the Howard M. Eisenberg, MD, Distinguished Professorship in Neurosurgery.

UM School of Medicine has New Requirement for Students: Culinary Medicine
First- and second-year medical students at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have a new requirement this year in order to earn their medical degree: culinary medicine. Among the first medical schools in the nation to implement the required course, UMSOM aims to increase future physicians’ nutrition knowledge through a class that combines didactic lectures on the evidence supporting many different approaches to healthy eating with experiential techniques that involve the proper chopping of onions, sautéing of vegetables, and garnishing of freshly baked salmon.
