New Vaccine Shows Promise Against Typhoid and Invasive Salmonella in First Human Trial
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) have completed a successful Phase 1 clinical trial of a novel vaccine designed to protect against both typhoid fever and invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella--two major causes of illness and death among children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Nationally-Recognized Pathologist Paul N. Staats, MD, Named Chair of Pathology at University of Maryland School of Medicine
Paul N. Staats, MD, a nationally recognized expert in cytopathology and gynecologic pathology, has been appointed Chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Department of Pathology, effective September 29. A UMSOM Professor of Pathology, Dr. Staats has served as the Interim Chair of Pathology since February 2024, after longtime Chair Sanford A. Stass, MD, stepped down.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Forms Global Health Alliance
Global health research in U.S. academic medical centers is facing dire threats with proposed cuts to the federal budget that would reduce funding for global health programs by 62 percent, from $10 billion to $3.8 billion. Cuts include reducing funding for the President’s Malaria Initiative by nearly 45 percent, zeroing out U.S. funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which received $300 million this year, as well as discontinuing $1.7 billion annually for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS.

Leading Maternal Health Physician-Scientist Andreea Creanga, MD, PhD, Named Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine
University of Maryland School of Medicine Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today that Andreea Creanga, MD, PhD, a distinguished and internationally recognized leader in maternal and perinatal health, has been appointed the new Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. She will also be installed as the Simon and Bessie Grollman Distinguished Professor. Her appointment is effective December 2025.

In Memoriam: Sanford Stass, MD, Longtime Chair of the Department of Pathology and the Department of Medical & Research Technology
The University of Maryland School of Medicine Community mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished long-time faculty members and department chairs, Sanford “Sandy” A. Stass, MD. A former chair of the Department of Pathology and Department of Medical & Research Technology, Dr. Stass stepped down in early 2024 from his leadership roles but continued as a Professor of Pathology until his retirement in November 2024. He passed away on September 9 at age 82.

UM School of Medicine Researchers Join Partnership to Establish New Center to Study Resilience and Aging
With the percentage of Americans ages 65 and older projected to increase by 47 percent by 2050, there’s an urgent need to close the large healthcare gap between those who age well into their 80’s and those who suffer long term disabilities from chronic illnesses like diabetes, kidney disease, and heart disease. To address these important research questions, the National Institute of Aging will fund a new center—that will be led by faculty at the University of Maryland--to identify the most important factors in the population that lead to healthy aging or aging resilience.
