UMSOM's Dr. Jay Magaziner Elected President of Fragility Fracture Network
Jay Magaziner, PhD, MSHyg, Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), was elected to serve as president of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN), a global network of professionals that help sets policy and care standards for treatment and secondary prevention of serious fractures impacting mobility, such as spinal and hip fractures.

Mini-Med School for Kids Program Celebrates Graduation
This year as in the past, University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty delivered engaging talks about health and science to local city youth as part of the Mini-Medical “Mini-Med” School for Kids Program. Offered as a public service since 2001, Mini-Med School is a tuition-free lecture series provided by UMSOM faculty, during which the lay public learns about diseases and their prevention. Established through a collaboration with the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club of Franklin Square, the Mini-Med School for Kids Program has reached over 600 children since its inception in 2008.

UM School of Medicine Researcher Warns of Need for Malaria Drug to Treat Severe Cases in U.S.
Each year there are more than 200 million cases of malaria worldwide, a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite that brings on fever and body aches and, in some cases, more serious conditions such as coma and death. While the vast majority of these cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, the U.S. each year sees more than 1,500 cases, and currently there is limited access to an intravenously-administered (IV) drug needed for the more serious cases, according to a top malaria researcher at the University of Maryland School Medicine (UMSOM).

Doctors Should Consider Prescribing Purified Omega-3 Capsules to Reduce Heart Risks in Those with Moderately High Triglyceride Levels
Taking a prescription omega-3 fatty acid capsule is an effective way of lowering moderately elevated levels of triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) and protecting against heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events, according to a new Science Advisory issued today by the American Heart Association (AHA). The advisory noted that prescription omega-3 fatty acids (a component found in fish oil) are an “effective and safe option for reducing triglycerides” when used either alone or with a cholesterol-lowering statin drug.

UM School of Medicine Researchers Begin Phase 1 Clinical Trial of Vaccine Against Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Mosquito-borne diseases including malaria, dengue and yellow fever, have a severe impact resulting in millions of deaths worldwide, hitting the world’s most vulnerable populations the hardest. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have begun testing an experimental vaccine that is designed to protect against a series of these diseases.

Researchers Identify How Vaginal Microbiome Can Elicit Resistance or Susceptibility to Chlamydia
The vaginal microbiome is believed to protect women against Chlamydia trachomatis, the etiological agent of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in developed countries. New research by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) shows how the microbiome can either protect or make a woman more susceptible to these serious infections.

UMSOM’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health Part of NIH-Funded Study of Two Seasonal Flu Vaccines
An early-stage clinical trial is evaluating two licensed seasonal influenza vaccines, administered with or without novel adjuvants, for their safety and ability to generate an immune response. Adjuvants are compounds added to vaccines to induce stronger and longer-lasting immune responses. The Phase 1 study is enrolling healthy adult volunteers at eight sites across the United States. The trial is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Inconsistent Reporting of Methodologies Makes Most Radiation Biology Studies Impossible to Replicate
Nearly 80 percent of radiation oncology studies funded by the National Institutes of Health involve investigating the effects that radiation has on tumor cells and healthy tissue in pre-clinical settings, such as experiments done in cell cultures or mice. A majority of these radiation biology studies, however, have serious flaws in how their irradiation methodology is described, which makes them very difficult to replicate, according to a new finding from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM).
