Multi-Strain Probiotic Therapy Shows Promise in Preventing Bacterial Vaginosis Recurrence
A global team of experts has identified a promising new approach to prevent recurrence of bacterial vaginosis (BV), a condition that affects millions of women worldwide. In a Phase 1 randomized clinical trial of women in the United States and South Africa, researchers found that a short course of a multi-strain probiotic restored protective bacteria to the vagina, significantly reducing disease recurrence. Cell Host & Microbe published the results from the study—a collaboration between investigators from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Mass General Brigham, the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), and collaborators from the Vaginal Microbiome Research Consortium.

UM School of Medicine Launches Grant and Mentorship Program to Help Young Researchers Get AHEAD
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has received an $680,000 grant from the nonprofit Burroughs Wellcome Fund to cultivate the next generation of physician-scientists with a commitment to community engagement. The grant will enable UMSOM, in partnership with Morgan State University (MSU), to launch the Advancing Physician-Scientist Development, Community Engagement and Dissemination (AHEAD) program. The program will offer mentorship, training, and funding to early-career UMSOM investigators and MSU undergraduates.

Epidemiology & Public Health Chair Andreea Creanga, MD, PhD, Reappointed to WHO Advisory Group on Maternal Mortality
Andreea Creanga, MD, PhD, Chair of Epidemiology and Public Health and the Simon and Bessie Grollman Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has been reappointed to the global advisory group that assists the World Health Organization (WHO) in tracking and estimating rates of maternal deaths around the world. Dr. Creanga was first appointed to the WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Maternal Mortality and Maternal Cause of Death Estimation in 2020.

Get to Know: Dr. Katherine E. Goodman
Katherine E. Goodman, PhD, JD, has carved out a unique niche for herself at University of Maryland School of Medicine. An Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, Dr. Goodman originally trained as a lawyer, and frequently collaborates with colleagues at the UM Francis King Carey School of Law. Dr. Goodman also serves on the faculty of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC), where her work focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) tools and their applications in the medical field and in patient encounters.

UM School of Medicine Establishes New Endowed Professorship in Translational Biomedical Engineering and Innovation through Maryland E-Nnovation Awards and UMB Matching Funds
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has been awarded $1 million in matching funds from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce. The funds—totaling $3 million when combined with matching qualified funding from UMB—will enable the establishment of the Edward and Jennifer St. John Endowed Professorship in Translational Biomedical Engineering and Innovation at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today.

UM School of Medicine Rural-MD Scholars Program Receives $2.4 Million Scholarship Endowment from Philip A. Zaffere Foundation
The Philip A. Zaffere Foundation, based on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, donated $2.4 million to the University of Maryland Rural-MD Scholars Program to support two full-tuition scholarships for incoming program medical students. The Rural-MD Scholars program aims to address the physician shortage in the region which is home to nearly 500,000 residents. On a national scale, the U.S. could face a shortage of up to 84,000 physicians in the next decade with more than one-third of active physicians expected to retire.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Launches Clinical Trial of Investigative Nasal Spray Medicine to Prevent Illnesses from Respiratory Viruses
Last year, at least one million people in the U.S. were hospitalized for respiratory virus illnesses like the flu or COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these individuals were at higher risk of getting infections due to living or working around young children who contract more respiratory infections. A new clinical trial led by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) will test a new experimental intranasal spray designed to boost immune defenses and reduce illness from respiratory viruses.
