Distinguished Physician-Scientist and Nationally Recognized Pulmonologist Roberto Machado, MD, Named Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine
University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today that Roberto Machado, MD, Chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Occupational Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, has been appointed the new Chair of the Department of Medicine, the largest department at UMSOM with more than 400 full-time faculty members and 12 divisions. He will also serve as the Physician-In-Chief at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Oldest Known Portrait of John Davidge Discovered in Defunct Fells Point Eatery
It could be called a finding of fate: The recent discovery of a more than 180-year-old painting of John Beale Davidge, MD, the founder of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The portrait had been stashed in a storage closet at the former Bertha’s Mussels Restaurant in Fells Point.

UM School of Medicine Team Wins NIH TARGETED Challenge with Brain Genome Editing Technology
A team of researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) recently won a $250,000 prize from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve technologies for delivering genome editing tools to targeted cells in the body. They were one of four winners in a competition after successfully demonstrating a new technique to deliver genome editing biotechnology across the blood-brain barrier to brain cells in preclinical models.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Launches Groundbreaking Study on THC/CBD Therapy for Dementia-Related Agitation at End of Life
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Palliative Medicine Program has launched a new clinical trial funded by the National Institute on Aging to explore a potential treatment for agitation in patients with dementia nearing the end of life. The study focuses on an investigational oral drug, T2:C100, which contains the two active ingredients in cannabis: THC and CBD.

In Memoriam: Dr. Stanley Sol Schocket
Stanley Sol Schocket passed away on June 24, 22025, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 90. He earned his MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1959, and later served as a faculty member and leader in the Department of Ophthalmology from 1968 until his retirement in 2019.

UM School of Medicine Research Reveals Alarming Health and Resource Burden of Sleep Apnea Among U.S. Active-Duty Military
With more than 1 in 10 Americans suffering from obstructive sleep apnea putting them at increased risk of heart problems and other health ills, a new study conducted by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) carefully analyzed the toll that this sleep disorder takes on U.S. active-duty military members, and their analysis was alarming: They found that soldiers with sleep apnea who are serving on the front lines are more than four times more likely to experience post traumatic stress disorder and three times more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury compared to those who don’t have the condition.

University of Maryland Launches B.S.-M.D. Program to Bridge Engineering, Data Science, and Medicine
The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) have launched a B.S.-M.D. program. This dual-degree program is designed to prepare highly motivated undergraduate students majoring in engineering, computer science, or mathematics to succeed in medical school.
