UMMS Rolls Out Virtual 'NEST' to Support Bedside Care Teams in Labor and Delivery Units Across the System

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has launched NEST (Neonatal Outcomes Impacted by Escalation Safety Telemetry), a groundbreaking remote fetal monitoring center that offers continuous, real-time monitoring of critical elements of labor and delivery across System hospitals. NEST is led by a medical director and team of highly specialized nurses who bring more than 200 years of combined experience in safely delivering thousands of babies.

Experts Propose New Framework for Evaluating Sex in Clinical Algorithms to Reduce Bias and Ensure Legality

Many physicians are now using algorithms that consider a patient’s sex, like heart disease risk assessment tools, to help with clinical decision-making. Reliance on these algorithms may result in men and women receiving different care or having different eligibility for healthcare resources, for example placement on an organ transplant list.

Presenting a Path Forward for Future Genetically-Modified Pig Heart Transplants: Lessons Learned from Second Patient

Continuing significant advancements in the field of xenotransplantation, surgeon-scientists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine provided an extensive analysis on the second patient in the world to receive a genetically-modified pig organ. Lawrence Faucette, 58, received a pig heart at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2023 to treat his end-stage heart failure. He lived for 40 days before choosing to forgo additional treatment after the transplant began to fail due to rejection.

Researchers Discover New Neurons that Suppress Food Intake

Obesity affects a staggering 40 percent of adults and 20 percent of children in the United States. While some new popular therapies are helping to tackle the epidemic of obesity, there is still so much that researchers do not understand about the brain-body connection that regulates appetite. Now, researchers have discovered a previously unknown population of neurons in the hypothalamus that regulate food intake and could be a promising new target for obesity drugs.

Exposure to Remote Wildfire Smoke Drifting Across the U.S. Linked to Increased Medical Visits for Heart and Lung Problems

Wildfire smoke has long been known to exacerbate health problems like heart disease, lung conditions, and asthma, but now a new study finds that smoke from these fires can lead to poor health thousands of miles away. Researchers from the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) found that medical visits for heart and lung problems rose by nearly 20 percent during six days in June, 2023, when smoke from Western Canadian wildfires drifted across the country, leading to very poor air quality days in Baltimore and the surrounding region.

Cynthia Egan Named Board of Visitors Chair Emerita in Recognition of Her Dedication and Leadership to UMSOM

University of Maryland School of Medicine Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, has announced that former UMSOM Board of Visitors Chair Cynthia Egan has been honored for her service with the title of “Chair Emerita.” Ms. Egan has served with distinction on the Board since 2013, with four years as Board Chair, until the recent appointment of Michael Greenebaum to that role.

Business Leader and Philanthropist Michael Greenebaum Named New Chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Board of Visitors

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, has announced that prominent business leader and philanthropist Michael Greenebaum has been named Chair of the School's Board of Visitors. Mr. Greenebaum served as the Inaugural Vice Chair of the Board of Visitors since 2021 and has been a board member since 2012.

UM Joins TouchPoint Baltimore to Provide Healthcare Resources for the West Baltimore Community

On November 12, faculty from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) joined partners across the University of Maryland health system and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to participate in TouchPoint Baltimore’s community resource fair, where they provided healthcare services and educational information to residents of West Baltimore. The event was held at TouchPoint Baltimore’s offices at Mondawmin Mall, close to the Village at Mondawmin which will house a new 17,000 square foot space bringing a range of medical, dental, and ancillary services to the community.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Receives Full Approval for Re-Accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today that the UMSOM has received full approval for re-accreditation for the maximum term of 8 years by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or “LCME.” The LCME is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA), and is the official accrediting body for all programs leading to the MD degree in the U.S.

On October 18, two University of Maryland School of Medicine students and their University of Maryland, Baltimore student teammates won the 11th annual National Academy of Medicine’s DC Public Health Case Challenge grand prize.
