Internationally Recognized Expert Leads University of Maryland School of Medicine Program in Sickle Cell Disease
Enrico M. Novelli, MD, MS, has been named Director of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Program in Sickle Cell Disease and a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology. An internationally recognized expert in sickle cell disease, he will treat patients at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) and serve as Chief of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) Sickle Cell Disease and Classical Hematology Network, a new initiative to expand access to care for patients with sickle cell disease across Maryland.

Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Highlights Need for Clear Public Health Communication and Global Disease Preparedness
A small outbreak of a rare hantavirus on a cruise ship earlier this year captured worldwide attention and sparked concerns about a possible new pandemic. But according to a new University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) commentary published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the outbreak posed little risk to the general public and offers important lessons about how health officials, scientists, and the media should communicate during emerging disease events.

CVD and Collaborators Launch Study to Better Understand Immune Responses to Lassa Fever
The University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), has announced the launch of a research study to understand how Lassa fever survivors fight and overcome Lassa virus infection. The study, titled “Identification and Immunologic Characterization of Adult Lassa Fever Survivors in Nigeria”, is a collaboration between CVD, The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) International Research Center of Excellence (IRCE), and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi State.

Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine Inaugurates New Facility to Develop Treatments for Addiction
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) celebrated a major milestone on June 2 with a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially inaugurate 34,000 square feet of newly renovated space for the Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine. Nationally Recognized Emergency Medicine Physician-Leader Michael E. Winters Named Chair of Emergency Medicine at UM School of Medicine
University of Maryland School of Medicine Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, along with University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) President Bert W. O’Malley, MD, today announced the appointment of Michael E. Winters, MD, MBA, as the permanent Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and Chief of Emergency Medicine Clinical Services at UMMC. Dr. Winters, a nationally recognized leader in emergency medicine and critical care, has served as Interim Chair since September 2025 and will continue in the permanent role effective immediately.

UMSOM receives $1 million in State Grant Funding to Build New Center for Combat Casualty Care
Governor Wes Moore today announced that the University of Maryland School of Medicine will receive $1 million in grant funding through the Maryland Department of Commerce to establish a Center for Combat Casualty Care with the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC). The Center will include a 5,000-square-foot Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) for the research and development of new tools and treatments, and the training of military clinicians.

First-in-Human Clinical Trial Shows Promising Results for New Lassa Fever Vaccine
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) reported encouraging results from an early clinical trial that tested a new dual vaccine against Lassa fever and rabies. The study, published today in the journal Nature Medicine, found that the vaccine was safe and induced immune responses against both viruses. There are currently no vaccines against Lassa fever on the market.

UM Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center is First in Region to Offer Innovative Cell Therapy for Synovial Sarcoma
The University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) is the first in the Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington D.C. region to offer an innovative cell therapy treatment for patients with an advanced type of soft tissue cancer, known as synovial sarcoma. This single-infusion T-cell therapy, called TCR-T therapy, involves engineering a patient’s own white blood cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.
