NIH Awards $14.5 million Grant to the University of Maryland School of Medicine to Develop a Data Center for the Human Virome Program

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced that it is launching a new research program to understand how the viruses that live within the human body or on the skin—known as the human virome—can impact a person’s health.

Neuroscientist Marco Venniro, PhD, Receives Prestigious Award from Society for Neuroscience

Marco Venniro, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), was awarded today with $30,000 from the Society for Neuroscience for their prestigious Jacob P. Waletzky Award. The annual award is given to an early career scientist (within 15 years of his/her PhD or MD degree) whose independent research has led to significant conceptual and empirical contributions to the understanding of drug addiction.

Meet Tomorrow’s Health Care Leaders

Last Friday, the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) celebrated the launch of their new B.S.-M.D. Program, a joint initiative between the A. James Clark School of Engineering, the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS), and UMSOM. Supported by a five-year, $12.75 million grant from the MPowering the State partnership, the program prepares highly motivated undergraduates majoring in engineering, computer science, or mathematics to continue on to medical school.

Irina Burd, MD, PhD named President of the Society for Reproductive Investigation

Irina Burd, MD, PhD, Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, was appointed President of the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) in March. With nearly 1,000 members, SRI supports the development of basic scientists and clinical investigators who advance critical research for reproductive sciences and women’s health.

New Survey Shows Rising Rates of Disordered Gambling Among Marylanders Since Legalization of Online Sports Betting

Since the legalization of mobile sports betting in Maryland nearly three years ago, the rate of disordered gambling in the state has increased by 42%, from 4% of Marylanders to 5.7%. That is according to a survey of more than 3,600 respondents conducted from May to July 2024. The survey was led by The Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM).

The Institute of Human Virology Receives $5.5 Million Endowment from the John C Martin Foundation

The University of Maryland School of Medicine received a $5.5 million endowment from the John C. Martin Foundation to the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). This sizeable award inaugurates John C Martin Lectureship and Distinguished Chair , the first endowed chair of its kind in this discipline, and one of the largest endowments in IHV’s history.

UM School of Medicine’s Esa Matius Davis Elected as Member of Prestigious National Academy of Medicine

Esa Matius Davis, MD, MPH, FAAFP, Professor of Family & Community Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Population Health and Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), was elected today as a new member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Dr. Davis, who is also Associate Vice President (AVP) for Community Health at the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), was recognized for her trailblazing work in advancing women’s health and health equity through epidemiological studies on maternal health disparities and her landmark clinical trials informing practice guidelines for improving obesity and diabetes-related maternal health outcomes.

New Monoclonal Antibody Shows Promise for Preventing Malaria Infections

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of death among children in sub-Saharan Africa, claiming more than 600,000 lives each year worldwide with limited efficacy in currently available treatments and vaccines. Now a new early-stage clinical trial found that a novel monoclonal antibody provided dose-dependent full protection against the malaria parasite with minimal side effects.
