UMSOM Researchers Unveil Progress and Challenges in Introducing Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia
Each year there are nearly 11 million cases of typhoid, a disease that is spread through contaminated food, drink and water. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are leading an international consortium that is studying the impact of a typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) in an effort to accelerate introduction of the vaccine in countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia where there is a high burden of typhoid.

UMSOM Researchers Discover Clues to Brain Differences Between Males and Females
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have discovered a mechanism for how androgens -- male sex steroids -- sculpt brain development. The research, conducted by Margaret M. McCarthy, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, could ultimately help researchers understand behavioral development differences between males and females.

Dr. Joseph Martinez Named Lead Physician for Patient-Centered Communications (PEP) Program
University of Maryland School of Medicine Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Anthony Lehman, MD, along with UMSOM Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that Joseph Martinez, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, has been named Lead Physician for the Program for Excellence in Patient-Centered Communication (PEP). He succeeds David Schwartz, MD, BCh,, who retired on Jan. 11, 2019.

Dr. Robert C. Miller, National Leader in Radiation Oncology, Named New Medical Director of Maryland Proton Treatment Center
William F. Regine, MD, FACR, FACRO, The Isadore and Fannie Schneider Foxman Chair and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), along with UMSOM Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that Robert C. Miller, MD, MBA, FASTRO a nationally-recognized radiation oncologist who currently serves as Vice Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Mayo Clinic, has been named Professor in the UMSOM Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC). He will begin his new position in April 2019.

UMSOM Scientists Call for Unrestricted Usage of Public Genome Data
