New Study Identifies Key Mechanism Driving HIV-Associated Immune Suppression

Researchers from the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have discovered how a specific type of immune cell may contribute to the persistence of HIV infections. The finding offers new insight into why the virus remains difficult to cure even with effective antiretroviral therapy.

UM School of Medicine Students Serve to Inspire Next Generation of Scientists at Community Event

More than 25 students from the University of Maryland School of Medicine joined peers from other health-related graduate schools at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and partner institutions to inspire 225 Baltimore City middle school students through interactive learning. The event, held earlier this month at Coppin State University, brought together students from the schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry, along with UMB faculty and professionals from Ascension Saint Agnes, Coppin State, and Morgan State University. The daylong program aimed to spark curiosity and encourage pre-teens to envision themselves as the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals.

UM School of Medicine Researcher Proposes New Medical Training on Cannabis Use

Maryland is one of 38 US states, along with three territories and the District of Columbia, that have legalized cannabis for medical purposes. This legal sea change has generated increasing interest in and use of cannabis and cannabis products, yet most health care practitioners and students feel underprepared to counsel patients on medical cannabis, according to a new paper co-authored by a University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty member and published in JAMA Network Open.

Distinguished Cancer Researcher Stuart S. Martin, PhD, Named Chair of the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology at UM School of Medicine

Stuart S. Martin, PhD, an internationally recognized breast cancer researcher, has been appointed Chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Pharmacology & Physiology, Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today. As the distinguished Drs. Angela and Harry Brodie Professor of Translational Cancer Research, Dr. Martin has served as Interim Chair of the Department over the past year. He also serves as the Deputy Director of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), one of 57 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation.

Early-Stage Clinical Trial Demonstrates Promise of Intranasal Influenza Vaccine in Generating Broad Immunity

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) reported encouraging results from an early phase clinical trial that found an experimental intranasal vaccine triggered a broad immune response against multiple strains of H5N1 “bird flu”. The study, published today in the journal Nature Communications, highlights the potential of mucosal immunization strategies--where vaccines are sprayed into the nostrils--to prime immune defenses against diverse influenza strains.
