UMSOM Class 2021 Celebrate Annual Student Clinician’s Ceremony
The Annual Student Clinician Ceremony was held today, to mark the Class of 2021 progression from basic sciences classroom instruction to their clinical years of medical education. The Class gathered in Davidge Hall, to hear inspirational messages from their mentors and revisit the Hippocratic Oath taken during the White Coat Ceremony.

James B. Kaper, PhD, the James and Carolyn Frenkil Distinguished Dean’s Professor Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), received the 2019 American Society of Microbiology (ASM) D.C. White Award for his accomplishments in interdisciplinary research and mentoring in microbiology.

Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that nationally-recognized physician-scientist Allan Doctor, MD, Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, has joined the Department of Pediatrics in UMSOM and is opening a new Center for Blood Oxygen Transport & Hemostasis.

Primate Study Finds New Evidence that Growth Factor Plays Key Role in Maintaining Healthy Pregnancy
About 1 in 10 pregnant women experience placenta abnormalities that lead to life-threatening preeclampsia (hypertension), preterm labor and fetal growth problems, but finding effective treatments to effectively prevent or reverse these conditions has so far been elusive. A new research finding from University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers, published in the June issue of the journal Endocrinology, could have important implications for developing novel treatments to prevent placental abnormalities.
