In Memoriam: Daniel Weinreich, Longtime Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) community mourns the passing of distinguished long-time faculty member, Daniel Weinreich, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He passed away on November 26, 2025, at the age of 83.

Philanthropic Support Vital for UMSOM Rural-MD Scholars Program

The Rural-MD Scholars program would not be possible without the support of generous donors who have each provided significant funds to support full-tuition scholarships to medical students. These students have committed to training and practicing on the Eastern shore of Maryland after graduation.

UM School of Medicine Rural-MD Scholars Program Receives $2.4 Million Scholarship Endowment from Philip A. Zaffere Foundation

The Philip A. Zaffere Foundation, based on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, donated  $2.4 million to the University of Maryland Rural-MD Scholars Program to support two full-tuition scholarships for incoming program medical students. The Rural-MD Scholars program aims to address the physician shortage in the region which is home to nearly 500,000 residents. On a national scale, the U.S. could face a shortage of up to 84,000 physicians in the next decade with more than one-third of active physicians expected to retire.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Launches Clinical Trial of Investigative Nasal Spray Medicine to Prevent Illnesses from Respiratory Viruses

Last year, at least one million people in the U.S. were hospitalized for respiratory virus illnesses like the flu or COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these individuals were at higher risk of getting infections due to living or working around young children who contract more respiratory infections. A new clinical trial led by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) will test a new experimental intranasal spray designed to boost immune defenses and reduce illness from respiratory viruses.

Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine Discover Genetic Ancestry is a Critical Component of Assessing Head and Neck Cancerous Tumors

Genetic ancestry plays a key role in determining the behavior of head and neck tumors and may help explain why African-American patients survive for half as long as their counterparts of European ancestry, according to a new review study led by researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) and the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC).

UMSOM Faculty Member Rozalina McCoy, MD, Chairs Committee Updating National Diabetes Guidelines

The American Diabetes Association recently released its 2026 Standards of Care in Diabetes, introducing major updates to improve diagnosis, treatment, and health outcomes for people living with and at risk for diabetes. Rozalina McCoy, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and endocrinologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), served as co-chair of the guideline committee. She is also Director of Precision Medicine and Population Health at the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing.

University of Maryland and its School of Medicine Ranked Among Top Universities Nationwide for Research by National Science Foundation

The University of Maryland has climbed to No. 14 among all U.S. universities and No. 9 among public universities for research and development (R&D) spending, with its School of Medicine ranking No. 27 among all U.S. medical schools and No. 14 among public medical schools, according to the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.

While many treatments are available, the challenge lies in determining how well a medication or other sleep aid works in individual patients.

New Study Finds Where You Live Affects Recovery After a Hip Fracture

Older adults who live in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods spend significantly fewer days at home in the year after a fall-related hip fracture than those living in more affluent areas, according to a large national study published today in JAMA Network Open.
