29th Annual White Coat Ceremony Welcomes Class of 2029
In a highly anticipated annual ritual for incoming medical school students, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Class of 2029 received their first white coats on August 8. The 173 new students gathered at the historic Hippodrome Theatre along with family, friends, faculty, and staff to take part in the decades old tradition of the White Coat Ceremony.

New Protein Therapy Shows Promise as First-Ever Antidote for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers, along with their colleagues, engineered a new molecule that appears promising as an effective antidote for carbon monoxide poisoning with fewer side effects than other molecules currently being tested, according to a new study published in the journal PNAS.

Get to Know: Dr. Peter Manza
Peter Manza, PhD, joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in January 2025. He’s also a faculty member at the UMSOM Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine, which UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, established in 2023 to pursue innovation in addiction treatments and research.

On July 30, faculty community leaders from the University of Maryland School of Medicine participated in a community health summit alongside Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, and Maryland State Senator Cory V. McCray. The event was organized by engAGE with Heart, led by Reverend Dr. Terris King, Pastor of Liberty Church of God, who described trust-based community hubs as “not just a program, but a ministry.” His church stands as a model for how integrated care and community engagement can transform healthcare delivery.

New Review Highlights Significant Need for Comprehensive Care for Gun Violence Survivors
A new review article published in JAMA underscores the critical need for comprehensive long-term medical care for patients treated for firearm injuries, which has become an epidemic in the U.S. fueled by years of rising gun violence. More than 48,000 people died of firearm injuries in the U.S. in 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with 120,000 suffering from gunshot wounds that they recover from.

New Research Simulates Cancer Cell Behavior
In the same vein as weather forecast models that predict developing storms, researchers now have developed a method to predict the cell activity in tissues over time. The new software combines genomics technologies with computational modeling to predict cell changes in behavior, such as communication between cells that could cause cancer cells to flourish.

Preoperative Counseling Reduces Opioid Use After ACL Reconstruction Surgery Without Increasing Patients’ Pain Level, New Research Shows
Preoperative counseling significantly reduced opioid use by patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, a common knee surgery, with no increase in pain following the procedure, according to new research by orthopaedic surgeons at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). The findings of the randomized clinical trial of 121 patients who had surgery at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab & Ortho) were published recently in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Fertig, PhD, FAIMBE, joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in December 2024 as a Professor of Medicine and the new Director of the School’s Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS). She’s also the Associate Director for Quantitative Science in the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC).
