UMSOM's Central Maryland Area Health Education Center Expands Into Five Additional Counties
The Baltimore Area Health Education Center has been renamed the Central Maryland Area Health Education Center (Central Maryland AHEC) and has expanded beyond Baltimore City and Baltimore County to five other Maryland counties including, Harford, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Howard, and Prince George's Counties.

UMSOM'S Opioid Addiction Treatment Experts Receive Funding from CareFirst for Telemedicine Network
Addiction experts at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) received a $212,171 grant from CareFirst to expand access to medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction via telemedicine to patients located on Maryland’s eastern shore.

James B. Kaper, PhD, Endowed as James and Carolyn Frenkil Distinguished Dean's Professor
James B. Kaper, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, was invested as the James & Carolyn Frenkil Distinguished Dean’s Professor on January 10 before a packed audience at Westminster Hall. Surrounded by family, friends, past and present colleagues and distinguished scientists, Dr. Kaper joined the elite group of 82 SOM faculty who currently hold endowed professorships, the highest honor bestowed by the SOM on individual faculty members.

Fraser, PhD, a pioneer in the field of microbial genomics, who is the Dean’s Endowed Professor, Department of Medicine, and Director of the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS), has been chosen as president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). AAAS is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society and a leading publisher of cutting edge research through its Science family of journals.

Multicenter Trial Supports Use of Topical Antibiotic as a Tool to Eliminate Staph Colonization in NICU Babies
A team of doctors led by Karen L. Kotloff, M.D., University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), has performed a clinical trial involving multiple hospitals that tested the effectiveness of applying a topical antibiotic known as mupirocin for prevention of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) infection in babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This study was published in the journal Pediatrics.
