University of Maryland School of Medicine Recruits Preeminent Thoracic and Lung Transplant Surgeon-Scientist Christine Lau, MD, MBA, To Be Next Chair of the Department of Surgery
University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean, E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, today announced that Christine Lau, MD, MBA, the George Minor Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA), will become the new Chair of the Department of Surgery at UMSOM and the Chief of Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Primate Study Finds New Evidence that Growth Factor Plays Key Role in Maintaining Healthy Pregnancy
About 1 in 10 pregnant women experience placenta abnormalities that lead to life-threatening preeclampsia (hypertension), preterm labor and fetal growth problems, but finding effective treatments to effectively prevent or reverse these conditions has so far been elusive. A new research finding from University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers, published in the June issue of the journal Endocrinology, could have important implications for developing novel treatments to prevent placental abnormalities.

The American Council on Education (ACE) has announced that J. Kathleen Tracy, PhD, Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), has been named an ACE Fellow for academic year 2019-20. Following nomination by the senior administration of their institutions and a rigorous application process, 39 Fellows were selected this year.
