Rural-MD Scholars Prepare for Careers in Healthcare on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
In an effort to address the healthcare shortage facing Maryland's nearly half-million residents who live on the rural Eastern Shore, the University of Maryland School of Medicine last year established a program to train and place students in rural healthcare settings. This academic year, three students who received full-tuition scholarships and were accepted into the newly named Rural-MD Scholars program started gaining insight into their future practice on the Eastern Shore through interactions with local healthcare professionals, community engagement, and hands-on clinical experiences.

Longtime Anesthesiology Department Chair and Academic Leader Peter Rock, MD, MBA Announces Retirement; Endowed Professorship to be Established in His Name
Peter Rock, MD, the Dr. Martin Helrich Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), announced recently that he will retire at the end of June after a distinguished academic career at the UMSOM, including 17 years as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.

New Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Treatment Offers Hope for Patients in Advanced Stage of Disease
A relatively new therapy used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in those with mild to moderate disease was found to be effective at preventing death in those with more advanced disease. Results were published on Wednesday, May 28, in The New England Journal of Medicine and could have “transformative implications” for patients, according to an editorial that accompanied the study written by Bradley Maron, MD, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Hypertension Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Using Testosterone Gel to Treat Women Recovering from Hip Fractures Provides No Added Benefits, Clinical Trial Finds
Hip fractures, often a result of a fall, are the most serious type of osteoporotic fracture because they are accompanied by considerable pain, loss of muscle and bone strength, reduced mobility and independence with daily activities, and increased risk for future fractures and death. More than 200,000 American women every year experience hip fractures, and up to three-quarters of them never fully regain their ability to resume normal activities like walking, even after undergoing weeks of exercise rehabilitation. In a pressing effort to test new treatments, researchers conducted a clinical trial to see whether applying a testosterone gel with exercise could improve function and mobility in these patients.

Hanna, MD, FASER, a nationally recognized expert in emergency and trauma radiology, has been named the new Chair of UMSOM’s Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, President of University of Maryland Diagnostic Imaging Specialists and Chief of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Clinical Service at University of Maryland Medical Center, following a national search.
