Dr. Deanna L. Kelly Named Director of the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center
Mark T. Gladwin, MD, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine announced today that Deanna L. Kelly, PharmD, BCPP, a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has been named Director of the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC), Dr. Kelly is a internationally recognized clinician-scientist specializing in the advancement of treatments for psychotic disorders and schizophrenia, after serving as Interim Director for three years.

The UMSOM Confocal Microscopy Core facility is now offering researchers access to a state-of-the-art STED microscope that provides super-resolution imaging capabilities. It is the latest addition of an Abberior Facility Line STED microscope.

In Memoriam: Dr. Stanley Sol Schocket
Stanley Sol Schocket passed away on June 24, 22025, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 90. He earned his MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1959, and later served as a faculty member and leader in the Department of Ophthalmology from 1968 until his retirement in 2019.

UM School of Medicine Research Reveals Alarming Health and Resource Burden of Sleep Apnea Among U.S. Active-Duty Military
With more than 1 in 10 Americans suffering from obstructive sleep apnea putting them at increased risk of heart problems and other health ills, a new study conducted by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) carefully analyzed the toll that this sleep disorder takes on U.S. active-duty military members, and their analysis was alarming: They found that soldiers with sleep apnea who are serving on the front lines are more than four times more likely to experience post traumatic stress disorder and three times more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury compared to those who don’t have the condition.

University of Maryland Launches B.S.-M.D. Program to Bridge Engineering, Data Science, and Medicine
The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) have launched a B.S.-M.D. program. This dual-degree program is designed to prepare highly motivated undergraduate students majoring in engineering, computer science, or mathematics to succeed in medical school. The program aims to recruit more engineers and data scientists into clinical professions, helping to bring new skills and perspectives into the future of medicine.

Rural-MD Scholars Prepare for Careers in Healthcare on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
In an effort to address the healthcare shortage facing Maryland's nearly half-million residents who live on the rural Eastern Shore, the University of Maryland School of Medicine last year established a program to train and place students in rural healthcare settings. This academic year, three students who received full-tuition scholarships and were accepted into the newly named Rural-MD Scholars program started gaining insight into their future practice on the Eastern Shore through interactions with local healthcare professionals, community engagement, and hands-on clinical experiences.
