Innovative CT Scan Technique Could Improve Prognosis and Treatments for Head and Neck Cancers, New Research Suggests
Cancers occurring in the mouth, nose, and throat are on the rise in the U.S., especially in younger people. About 60,000 new cases are diagnosed every year with one in five cases occurring in people younger than 55, according to the American Cancer Society. A new study provides insights that may eventually help oncologists better predict how the disease will respond to certain therapies, leading to improved survival outcomes for patients.

UM School of Medicine Surgeon-Scientist to Co-Lead Large International Clinical Trial to Determine Most Effective Treatment for Common Hip Fracture in Older Adults
Hip fractures in older adults can lead to serious complications, disability and even death. Traditionally, orthopaedic surgeons have repaired a common fracture of the upper part of the thigh bone, or femur, near the hip using screws and plates to piece together slightly separated pieces of bone. But many surgeons now treat these “minimally displaced” femoral neck fractures by replacing the hip joint with a metal implant.

University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) Executive Director, Taofeek K. Owonikoko, MD, PhD, and University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Surgery Chair, Christine Lau, MD, MBA, have announced that Jeremy L. Davis, MD, will serve as the new Surgical Oncology Lead for UMGCCC and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at UMSOM. Dr. Davis is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist and leader in gastric cancer research.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) are pleased to announce a $10 million joint gift from Edward and Jennifer St. John and the Edward St. John Foundation. This landmark investment will launch the Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM), a collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) at UMB and the A. James Clark School of Engineering at UMCP. Together, researchers from these distinct disciplines will tackle a broad spectrum of generational health challenges and drive medical innovations that benefit patients in Maryland and beyond.
