UM School of Medicine Launches Global Health Alliance on World Health Day
On April 7, 2026, World Health Day, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) formally launched the Global Health Alliance (UMGHA), a new platform designed to strengthen and connect the School’s decades of global health work. The launch brought together faculty, trainees, international partners, and government leaders from Kenya, Nigeria, and the United States, reflecting the collaborative spirit that has defined UMSOM’s global engagement for more than 50 years.

Get to Know: Stefan H. Kappe, PhD
Distinguished parasitologist and immunologist Stefan Kappe, PhD, recently became the new Director of the UM School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) and the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor of Vaccinology and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics. During his work at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Research Institute, he pioneered the use of genetic engineering to develop live attenuated vaccines against the deadly malaria parasites that sicken hundreds of millions of people and kill up to a million people worldwide each year.

The event drew 132 attendees, including students, staff, faculty, and local community leaders, for a series of workshops and panel discussions on women’s health topics that predominantly affect Black women.

Large U.S. Trial Finds No Added Benefit from Combination Antibiotic to Prevent Infections After Surgery for Complex Leg Fractures
A large multicenter clinical trial found no benefit to using two antibiotic powders — vancomycin, which targets gram-positive bacteria seen commonly in surgical infections, and tobramycin, which targets gram-negative bacteria that can also cause infection after fracture — during surgery for high‑risk leg fractures involving the shin bone.

Greenebaum Family Donates $5.5 Million to Advance Cancer Research and Patient Care
The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Family Foundation has donated $5.5 million to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) to help advance groundbreaking scientific research and compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care in Maryland and across the region. The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center is named in honor of Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum, who, 30 years ago, gave a transformative gift after Mrs. Greenebaum’s successful treatment for breast cancer.

At exactly noon on Friday, March 20, graduating fourth-year medical students from UM School of Medicine and across the country learned where they matched as residents during “Match Day” festivities. An impressive 98 percent of students matched this year, which is in line with previous years’ successes.

When they are included, they’re often lumped together as one group, despite the rich diversity among different Latin American populations. This lack of data has impeded genetic discoveries in Latin Americans and has stalled advances in the clinical use of precision medicine.

UMSOM Researchers Create Revolutionary Database to Map Neocortical Development Across Species
Researchers have described major advances in the understanding of the development of the neocortex —layer-by-layer and cell-by-cell—thanks to a pioneering database developed at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) that combines multiomic data from 188 different studies. The revolutionary and publicly accessible database—called the Neuroscience Multi-Omic Analytics (NeMO Analytics)—is helping scientists make groundbreaking discoveries about the brain and disease development by using vast amounts of human, non-human primate, mouse, and organoid data.

UMSOM Students Celebrate Transition to Clinical Rotations at Annual Student Clinician Ceremony
