Silver Spring Woman Becomes First Adult Sickle Cell Disease Patient in Maryland to Receive FDA-Approved Gene Therapy
A 41-year-old Silver Spring woman who has endured debilitating pain crises and frequent hospitalizations throughout much of her life as the result of sickle cell disease has been treated at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) with her own genetically engineered stem cells in an effort to prevent life-threatening complications and achieve a long-term cure. UMMC is the academic flagship hospital of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

UM School of Medicine Researchers Uncover New Pathway Allowing Red Blood Cells to Make Hemoglobin Under Stress
Scientists have long been puzzled by how maturing red blood cells manage to produce all the hemoglobin they need to carry oxygen to tissues, even after shedding the vital structures they need to produce it. Now, new University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) research has found a missing piece to the puzzle: In the final stages of their maturation, red blood cells can import heme, a crucial, iron-containing component of hemoglobin, from other cells. This surprising finding not only overturns long-standing assumptions about heme and red blood cells but could eventually lead to new therapies for inherited genetic blood disorders such as β-thalassemia.

UM School of Medicine Launches Global Health Alliance on World Health Day
On April 7, 2026, World Health Day, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) formally launched the Global Health Alliance (UMGHA), a new platform designed to strengthen and connect the School’s decades of global health work. The launch brought together faculty, trainees, international partners, and government leaders from Kenya, Nigeria, and the United States, reflecting the collaborative spirit that has defined UMSOM’s global engagement for more than 50 years.

Get to Know: Stefan H. Kappe, PhD
Distinguished parasitologist and immunologist Stefan Kappe, PhD, recently became the new Director of the UM School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) and the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor of Vaccinology and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics. During his work at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Research Institute, he pioneered the use of genetic engineering to develop live attenuated vaccines against the deadly malaria parasites that sicken hundreds of millions of people and kill up to a million people worldwide each year.

Large U.S. Trial Finds No Added Benefit from Combination Antibiotic to Prevent Infections After Surgery for Complex Leg Fractures
A large multicenter clinical trial found no benefit to using two antibiotic powders — vancomycin, which targets gram-positive bacteria seen commonly in surgical infections, and tobramycin, which targets gram-negative bacteria that can also cause infection after fracture — during surgery for high‑risk leg fractures involving the shin bone.

Greenebaum Family Donates $5.5 Million to Advance Cancer Research and Patient Care
The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Family Foundation has donated $5.5 million to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) to help advance groundbreaking scientific research and compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care in Maryland and across the region. The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center is named in honor of Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum, who, 30 years ago, gave a transformative gift after Mrs. Greenebaum’s successful treatment for breast cancer.
