Mobile Addiction Treatment Unit Serves Maryland Eastern Shore
Health and addiction treatment officials from the Caroline County Health Department, Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in Denton, MD., launched the Eastern Shore Mobile Care Collaborative (ESMCC), a mobile system designed to provide state-of-the-art treatment for opioid disorders for those in need on the Maryland Eastern shore.

UM School of Medicine's Institute for Genome Sciences Awarded $17.5 Million Grant for Infectious Disease Research
The Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) was awarded $17.5 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to fund the IGS Genome Center for Infectious Diseases (GCID) for another five years.

12th Annual Dr. Aaron I. Grollman Visiting Professorship in Basic Sciences Lectureship Features Dr. Eva Harris
Eva Harris, PhD, never met a mosquito she didn’t like. A Professor of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Global Health at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Harris was recently the guest speaker at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Dr. Aaron I. Grollman Visiting Professorship in Basic Sciences Lectureship, where she shared her research on the control of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya—the most prevalent mosquito-borne diseases in humans. She is also the Co-Founder and President of the Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI), an international non-profit dedicated to developing sustainable local research and public health systems in resource-poor settings.

UM School of Medicine Announces Leadership Transition in Department of Neurosurgery
Dean E Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that longtime Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and nationally-recognized neurosurgeon Howard M. Eisenberg, MD, will be stepping down at the end of this academic year as chair after 23 years. He will return to the full-time faculty of the UMSOM Department of Neurosurgery, retaining his title as the R.K. Thompson Professor of Neurosurgery. He will continue his research and his efforts advancing surgical techniques including gamma knife radiosurgery and image-guided focused ultrasound.

UMSOM Researchers Discover a Critical Receptor Involved in the Response to Fast-Acting Antidepressants Like Ketamine
Effective treatment of clinical depression remains a major mental health issue, with roughly 30 percent of patients who do not respond to any of the available treatments. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have discovered a crucial receptor called mGlu2 that is critical to the mechanism of fast-acting antidepressants such as ketamine when used to treat depression.

New Study Finds That Bacteria and Immunity in the Cervix May be Key to Predicting Premature Birth
Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB), defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, and the related complications, are the largest contributors to infant death in the United States and worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have discovered that bacteria and innate immune factors in a woman’s birth canal and cervix may increase the risk of spontaneous preterm birth or provide protection against such births.

STEM education has been proven to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps often found in math and science fields. From Dreams to Reality: Match Day 2019 at the University of Maryland School of Medicine
After years of hard work, determination, and personal sacrifice, University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) medical students’ dreams finally came to fruition at the Match Day ceremony on March 15. At exactly noon, medical students at the UMSOM and around the country, some 30,000 students across the U.S., received an envelope telling them where they will do their residency training. It was truly a day filled with excitement and anticipation for the UMSOM Class of 2019 at Baltimore’s famed Hippodrome Theater.
