University of Maryland's Schools of Medicine and Engineering First to Use Unmanned Aircraft to Successfully Deliver Kidney for Transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center
In a first-ever advance in human medicine and transplantation, an unmanned aircraft has delivered a donor kidney to surgeons for successful transplantation in a patient with kidney failure. Transplant physicians and researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in Baltimore joined aviation and engineering experts at the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site, part of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park to complete this landmark 2.8 mile, 9.52 minute flight on April 19, 2019..

Margaret "Peg" McCarthy, PhD, is Invested as the Second James and Carolyn Frenkil Dean's Professor
In front of a standing ovation at Westminster Hall on March 26, Margaret McCarthy, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, became the second University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty member to hold the James and Carolyn Frenkil Dean’s Professorship. The two professorships, made possible by the generosity of UMSOM Board of Visitors member and longtime philanthropist Carolyn B. Frenkil, were established to recognize distinguished faculty in the basic sciences. The ceremony followed the investiture of James Kaper, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, in March.

Mobile Addiction Treatment Unit Serves Maryland Eastern Shore
Health and addiction treatment officials from the Caroline County Health Department, Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in Denton, MD., launched the Eastern Shore Mobile Care Collaborative (ESMCC), a mobile system designed to provide state-of-the-art treatment for opioid disorders for those in need on the Maryland Eastern shore.

UM School of Medicine's Institute for Genome Sciences Awarded $17.5 Million Grant for Infectious Disease Research
The Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) was awarded $17.5 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to fund the IGS Genome Center for Infectious Diseases (GCID) for another five years.

Eva Harris, PhD, never met a mosquito she didn’t like. A Professor of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Global Health at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Harris was recently the guest speaker at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Dr. Aaron I. Grollman Visiting Professorship in Basic Sciences Lectureship, where she shared her research on the control of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya—the most prevalent mosquito-borne diseases in humans. She is also the Co-Founder and President of the Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI), an international non-profit dedicated to developing sustainable local research and public health systems in resource-poor settings.

UM School of Medicine Announces Leadership Transition in Department of Neurosurgery
Dean E Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that longtime Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and nationally-recognized neurosurgeon Howard M. Eisenberg, MD, will be stepping down at the end of this academic year as chair after 23 years. He will return to the full-time faculty of the UMSOM Department of Neurosurgery, retaining his title as the R.K. Thompson Professor of Neurosurgery. He will continue his research and his efforts advancing surgical techniques including gamma knife radiosurgery and image-guided focused ultrasound.

UMSOM Researchers Discover a Critical Receptor Involved in the Response to Fast-Acting Antidepressants Like Ketamine
Effective treatment of clinical depression remains a major mental health issue, with roughly 30 percent of patients who do not respond to any of the available treatments. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have discovered a crucial receptor called mGlu2 that is critical to the mechanism of fast-acting antidepressants such as ketamine when used to treat depression.
