Residency Information

The University of Maryland is the nation's fifth oldest Medical School, and the School and the Department of Medicine enjoy histories rich in contributions to superb care, the advancement of medical knowledge, and an enthusiastic commitment to education. We are particularly proud of our record in teaching; this remains a core mission of the Department today.

At the center of our teaching efforts are our residency programs, as all of our conferences, rounds and seminars are aimed at providing an educational focus for our residents. The quality of this educational mission is assured by the presence of a large and dedicated faculty whose many accomplishments are a source of great pride for the Department.

Our flexibility in remodeling the residency has proven to be another educational asset, leading to tangible improvements in the inpatient rotations, ambulatory experience, electives, and conferences. We have also recently expanded the exposure residents may obtain to research. Participation in such projects is growing rapidly and has forged an even stronger bond between residents and faculty and allowed our residents to secure superb fellowship positions across the country. The remarkable growth in the Department's excellent national reputation has been due, in large part, to the quality of faculty and residents and the collegial atmosphere in the hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. Maryland is an exciting place to learn and discover, and optimism about our future is high.

Our residency program is overseen by the Education Office. Our hope is that you will want to visit our program, meet with our residents, faculty and students, and view our modern facilities to obtain a firsthand impression of the many strengths in our Department. The University of Maryland School of Medicine also offers a PhD Program for Clinicians, which provides a rigorous, accelerated curriculum to train medical scientists for careers in basic or translational research.

We think you will agree that, while we are the beneficiaries of a proud tradition begun in 1807, we also have a future bright with promise and dedication to compassionate service, superior education and innovative research.

We look forward to meeting you and making you feel welcome.
