About Us

The Department of Medical and Research Technology (DMRT) is the largest accredited medical laboratory science program in the state of Maryland and is housed within the University of Maryland School of Medicine, chartered in 1807 as the first public medical school in the United States and located on the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus.

HOWEVER, DMRT WILL BE CLOSING AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE 2026 ACADEMIC YEAR.

The DMRT is located in the Allied Health Building on two floors consisting of 22,000 square feet of space. Facilities include:

  • One lecture hall
  • Four student laboratories, each capable of handling sixty students
  • Student and faculty resource rooms
  • Five research laboratories
  • Four faculty/staff office pods
  • Two conference rooms

Our Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and M.S. graduates work in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and research institutions throughout the state of Maryland, and across the country.

Program Outcomes

For the academic years 2022-2024, there has been a 100% completion rate, 100% ASCP Board of Registry Pass rate, and a 100% placement rate. Data from the 2022-2024 academic year show a 100% completion rate while ASCP board scores and 2023-2024 placements are pending completion.
