As program director of the longest running Medical Laboratory Science program of over 50 years with over 1500 alumni, it saddens me to announce that the DMRT's class of 2026 will be our last class for our BS degree MLS students and our online Microbiology categorical students  We are unable to admit any new students into our programs per the Dean of the School of Medicine due to severe budget cuts to the UMB campus from the Maryland General Assembly.

There are three choices in Maryland where you can transfer to earn your degree in medical laboratory science or, if you have 30 credits in biology and chemistry, earn a certificate in Clinical Microbiology. Please check with each program if the certificate is in-person or online.

For those outside of Maryland, ASCLS has a compendium of MLS programs across the US. These resources can be reached at: https://ascls.org/online-academic-programs/ . Weber State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Arkansas also have online programs including online certificate programs.

Whatever program you choose I wish you the best success in your clinical laboratory career. Although DMRT's graduate program is also closing, the Graduate School at UMB has a wealth of MS and PhD programs. I encourage you to continue your education at UMB if you are thinking of obtaining a MS or PhD degree. The graduate school's website is https://graduate.umaryland.edu/. Many of them are online programs.

Sincerely,

Lorraine Doucette, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM
