Dual-Degree Programs

Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD)

Students may apply and be admitted to the MSTP pre-matriculation or post-matriculation.

Requirements for the combined MD and PhD degrees are equivalent to those of the separate degrees of the Doctor of Medicine of the School of Medicine and the Doctor of Philosophy of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland. The dual degree program can be completed within six to eight years.

The MD is combined with a PhD program offered by the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) in the following areas: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Epidemiology and Human Genetics, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience and Bioengineering (at UMCP).

Combined MD/Master's

Students may apply and be admitted to the Master’s dual-degree programs pre-matriculation or post-matriculation.

Requirements for the combined MD and Master’s degrees are equivalent to those of the separate degrees of the Doctor of Medicine of the School of Medicine and the Master’s Program. The dual degree program is designed to be completed within five years.

The MD is combined with a Master’s program offered by the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) in the following areas: Public Health, Clinical Research, Cellular & Molecular Biomedical Science, Bioengineering (at UMCP), Health Administration (at UMCP), Public Policy (at UMCP) and Business Administration (at UMCP).  

Joint Program

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency/M.D. Program

This joint program is in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.  For admissions information and detailed information about this program, please visit the School of Dentistry website.

Students may only apply and be admitted pre-matriculation.

Requirements for the joint program for the Doctor of Medicine of the School of Medicine are specific to this joint program curriculum and the OMS residency program. The joint program is designed to be completed within six years. When students are in the OMS residency time, students are subject to the policies of the OMS residency program.

 

Students who choose not to continue in a dual-degree or joint program must contact the Assistant Dean for Dual Degree Programs in the Office of Student Research (Master’s Programs only), a dean in the Office of Student Affairs, and the dual-degree or joint Program Chair/Faculty Contact. The student must request MD-only status from the Advancement Committee. A written request addressed to the Advancement Committee must be provided to an Office of Student Affairs dean. The Advancement Committee meets monthly and will review the student request to change dual-degree status on its next available meeting agenda.

Medical School policies apply to all students enrolled in the MD program of the MD-combined degree programs and the MD-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency. SOM teaching faculty and administrators are provided access to medical school policies on the OSA website and the academic handbook.
