MD/Masters Dual Degrees

The MD/Masters Programs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM) were developed to provide medical students with advanced training in specific areas to complement and enhance their medical training and maximize opportunities after graduation.

Specialized Training

We offer specialized training in 8 different dual degree programs:

Complete MD/MS in 5 Years with Shared Courses

Integrating the Clinical Medicine Curriculum and Advanced Graduate Studies

All of our dual degree programs are designed to be finished in 5 years with the bulk of the Master’s course work being done in a “step-out” year that is taken after the third year of medical school.  Several features facilitate the completion of both degrees in 5 years.  For example, some courses are designated to be shared between the MD and Masters’ programs, simultaneously satisfying requirements for both degrees.  In addition, each Master’s program requires a scholarly project which simultaneously satisfies the Scholarly Project requirement of the Foundations of Research and Critical Thinking course.

Admission

Prospective students can apply to any of these programs through the School of Medicine application process. Current students may also apply after they have matriculated as MD-only candidates. Specific questions about admission and application instructions should be addressed to the individual Program Directors, or to the Dual Degree Program Director.
