The Health Sciences and Human Services Library

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) is one of the largest health sciences libraries in the United States. The library serves as a campus hub for collaboration and learning. With wireless connectivity throughout the building, the HSHSL has seating for over 800 users, 41 group study rooms, a poster printing service, an Innovation Space with 3D printers, a presentation and production studioart gallery, and multiple technology-enhanced meeting and collaboration spaces.

Through the HSHSL’s web site (www.hshsl.umaryland.edu,) students have access to a suite of research services that includes research consultations, free workshops on topics including health literacy, data management, and citation managers, and video tutorials that cover how to search databases such as PubMed and Embase, formatting your poster for printing, and more. The School of Medicine has a dedicated librarian, Nicole Shelawala, M. Eng., MLIS, who can be contacted at nshelawala@hshsl.umaryland.edu for expert assistance

The library provides access to 105 databases, 3,798 e-journals, 18,055 e-books, and maintains a collection of 144,632 print books and 7,586 archival print journals. All of the current journal literature is available electronically. Through the library’s interlibrary loan and document delivery service, students may freely acquire articles and other resources not available through the library’s collections. The HSHSL also provides access to the UMB Digital Archive, an open access university repository hosting university created research including white papers, research posters, and more.
