The IARS Annual Meeting and International Science Symposium Align with The AUA and SOCCA Annual Meetings Highlighting Anesthesiology Faculty Members

The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) Annual Meeting and International Science Symposium aligning with the Association of University Anesthesiologists(AUA) Annual Meeting and Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA) Annual Meeting took place Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 20, 2019 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The Department of Anesthesiology was well represented with faculty and student presentations throughout the meeting. Gary Fiskum, PhD, M. Jane Matjasko Professor for Research and Vice Chair for Research, presented Hyperoxic Resuscitation Following Canine Cardiac Arrest Increases Cerebellar Purkinje Neuronal Damage and Inflammatory Microglial Activation as part of the AUA Advisory Board Oral Session I and as part of AUA Poster Session B on Thursday, May 16, which earned him the distinction of being chosen as one of four top finalists for the Kosaka Best of Meeting Abstract Awards in the Basic Science Category.

Alan Faden, MD, David S. Brown Professor in Trauma and Director, Shock Trauma Anesthesiology Research Center (STAR), presented Omics Applications in Neurotrauma Research: From Pathobiology to Treatment on Saturday, May 18 as part of the SOCCA Panel entitled, “Towards Precision Medicine Intensive Care Unit,” moderated by Robert David Stevens, MD, FCCM of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

On Sunday, May 19, Wei Chao, MD, PhD, FAHA, Anesthesiology Endowed Professor in Translational Research, Vice-Chair for Translational Research and Associate Director, Shock Trauma anesthesiology Research Center, moderated the SOCCA Panel entitled, “Sepsis-Induced Coagulopathy: Mechanisms and Management.” Of the three presentations given, the second was presented by the Department’s Brittney Williams, MD on Molecular Link between Inflammation and Coagulopathy in Sepsis.
