Professional Liability Insurance

Medical students are required to hold professional liability insurance protecting against potential malpractice claims that may arise while participating in activities that are a part of and requirement of the curriculum.

Coverage is provided by Maryland Medicine Comprehensive Insurance Program (MMCIP) through student fees.  Coverage for the University of Maryland School of Medicine MD Program students is limited solely to those individuals in good academic standing during the period(s) of active enrollment. Coverage is afforded for clinical activities authorized by, and at locations approved by, the Office of Student Affairs. Coverage is subject to the limits of liability, terms and conditions of the Trust and any extensions thereof. Coverage is provided on a Claims Made with Tail basis.

Note voluntary participation in health fairs or other patient/interactions and activities through student organizations (e.g., not within the required curriculum) must be approved by OSA and the UMB Office of Risk Management – using this form.

Note, students on a leave of absence from the curriculum, or students participating in activities outside of those that are a requirement of the curriculum or have been previously approved, are not covered.
