From Groundbreaking Achievements to Record-Breaking Milestones
On October 24, 2018, E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM), delivered the State of the School Address in Leadership Hall.
This year’s theme was "From Groundbreaking Achievements to Record-Breaking Milestones." The address included a special virtual tour and ceremonial ribbon-cutting marking the opening of UMSOM’s newest research building, Health Sciences Research Facility (HSRF) III. This year’s State of the School Address also featured a series of videos that highlighted the accomplishments of faculty, staff, and students across all mission areas: Research, Patient Care, Education and Community Impact.
In 2018, the School of Medicine celebrated the largest gift in its history. A $20 million pledge made by Dr. Robert E. Fischell and his wife Susan will establish a Center for Biomedical Innovation at the School of Medicine and support endowed professorships.
The total income from grants and contracts rose dramatically in FY’18 to a record-setting $537 million dollars, a 45 percent increase over the last 5 years. Looking at AAMC funding data, the School of Medicine ranks 8th among all public medical schools nationwide.
The number of faculty practice locations run by the School of Medicine grew to 60, and plan performance continues to excel. Clinical Revenue has grown 24% in the last five years to $345 million.
On the education front, the School of Medicine received full approval for re-accreditation following a rigorous review by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
Other highlights included UMSOM’s multifaceted response to the opioid epidemic, as well as discoveries in congenital heart disease, and the learning experiences of first-year medical students. Our community impact was strong with programs like Stop the Bleed and Mini-Med School for Kids
