Shared Instrumentation Grants (S-10's)

NIH Supported Shared Instrumentation Grants

The NIH's Office of Research Infrastructure Program (ORIP's) S10 Instrumentation Grant Programs support purchases of state-of-the-art commercially available instruments to enhance research of NIH–funded investigators. Instruments that are awarded are typically too expensive to be obtained by an individual investigator with a research project grant. Every instrument awarded by an S10 grant is used on a shared basis, which makes the programs cost-efficient and beneficial to thousands of investigators in hundreds of institutions nationwide.

To learn more about this program please visit the related NIH web site.

There is another round of major shared instrumentation grants (S10) coming up with applications due at NIH on June 1, 2023.

There are two types that we can apply for:

The SOM Dean’s Office of Research Affairs coordinates these applications and their accompanying institutional support requests in collaboration with the leadership of CIBR.

To ensure a timely and efficient process, if you are planning on requesting some institutional support you must submit an outline draft of the proposal to SOM-ORA@som.umaryland.edu by Monday, April 10, 2023.

  1. This draft should include:
    1. Paragraph summary of the equipment, significance, rationale, and justification, etc.
    2. Draft of the overall budget
    3. List of key users and their departments
    4. Detail of your request for institutional support and any other support you have or are requesting for the application, and please estimate which fiscal year(s) you are requesting support, and how much each year and category of expense (e.g., service contracts, salary, space, etc.).
  2. Following the receipt of these draft proposals, we will work with all the stakeholders to ensure sufficient institutional support will be leveraged for these proposals.
  3. If you do not submit a draft to us by April 10, we cannot provide any contingency institutional support for your proposal. Also, be aware that a June 1, 2023 NIH deadline predicates an internal routing deadline to ORA of Monday, May 22, 2023, and an internal SPA deadline of Wednesday, May 24, 2023 (accounting for the Memorial Day Holiday) for the routing of your proposals.

Finally, please note that for those of you performing mental health related research, NIMH has released an additional S10 opportunity exclusive to NIMH designed to fund the purchase or upgrade of instruments conducting mental health-related research. The NIH deadline for that opportunity is not until October 10, 2023. We do not require draft proposals and requests for institutional support at this time, but investigators planning
