Stroke, cardiac arrest, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic hemorrhagic shock are among the major causes of death and long-term disability. The common features of these diseases are tissue ischemia-reperfusion injury, neurodegeneration, as well as local and systemic inflammation.

Our research program is a part of the Shock Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Organized Research Center (STAR-ORC), involving the Shock Trauma Center as well as Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery. Our research program mainly focuses on the following research areas:

  • The studies of brain ischemia-reperfusion injury using both global and focal brain ischemia animal models. Specific areas include intracellular membrane trafficking, protein misfolding and aggregation, as well as local and systemic inflammation after brain ischemia. These projects are supported by NIH and Veteran Affair research grants
  • The studies of Alzheimer’s disease early stage biomarkers, which are supported by an NIH grant.
  • The investigations of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta, known as REBOA, and REBOA management of hemorrhagic shock in the rat and swine animal models, which are supported by the research grants from the Department of Defense and Maryland State Technology Organization (TEDCO).
