Pre-clerkship Curriculum: Year 2

Practice of Medicine II (Year Long)

PoM-II is part of multi-year longitudinal experience to provide each student with the understanding of the components of clinical medicine and the community in which they will be learning/practicing in. Through a series of lectures, small group workshops, standardized patient exercises and longitudinal clinical sessions with faculty members, students will gain the skills that form the foundation of their clinical rotations and clerkships.

Clinical Integration of First Year (1 Week)

Clinical Integration of First Year (CLIFY) is a course designed to review and solidify the material from the first year of medical school. This is a one-week course that emphasizes the content first learned in Foundations, Brain and Behavior, Digestion and Hormones, Blood and Host Defense, and Practice of Medicine. The course will integrate the information learned in the first year with clinical cases to provide context and examples of the applicability of the material. The course will also reinforce the basic science fundamentals as they apply to these clinical cases.

Cardiovascular, Renal & Pulmonary (12 Weeks)

Cardiovascular, Renal & Pulmonary is a second-year course that covers three major areas: 1) Cardiovascular System, 2) Renal System, 3) Pulmonary System. This integrated course focuses on topics including general principles and clinical applications within those three systems. The format consists of lectures, small group discussions, clinical correlations, and team-based learning sessions. Participation of faculty from both basic and clinical departments will provide an integrated coverage of major topics related to health and disease.

Skin, Bones & Musculature (7 Weeks)

Skin, Bones & Musculature is an interdisciplinary course taught by both basic science and clinical faculty, with a strong focus on student-driven interactive learning. SBM consists of three units - Musculoskeletal, Dermatology, and Rheumatology – taught across lectures, small group and team-based learning activities, and dissection in the cadaver lab. The course is designed to equip MSII students with a foundational understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy and pathology, key concepts in Dermatology, and the pathophysiology of Rheumatological conditions. Course content also includes both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutic interventions related to the clinical conditions introduced in each lecture. Beyond the classroom, the course will prepare students for clinical applications of this knowledge during pre-clerkship and clerkship years.

Life Cycle (6 Weeks)

Life Cycle teaches development throughout the human cycle from pre-conception to death. This course integrates basic science, anatomy, physiology and pathology. Course content includes the male and female reproductive systems, embryology, birth and the fetus, pediatric development, and the unique issues that affect the aging of adolescents, adults and the elderly. The format consists of formal lectures, team-based learning, small group activities, self-study, and a unique longitudinal case study in which students will have the opportunity to work in groups to apply their knowledge. Associated physical exam skills, including the genital and newborn exams, will be integrated throughout. The course is taught by faculty in a great variety of departments, including Gynecology, Urology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology.

Multisystem (2 Weeks)

Multisystem is an interdisciplinary course including clinical as well as basic science education. The course aims to help students integrate pathology from various organ systems and disease processes that span multiple organ systems. Not only will this course serve as a review of prior pathology in preparation for the step exam but will also introduce new material vital to the students’ step preparation and preparation for clinical rotations. Education will be multifaceted, including simulation scenarios, ultrasound education, multidisciplinary discussions, and small groups. Topics such as sepsis, trauma, and pharmacology will be explored, and students will also be taught how to approach a patient with a symptom as part of a multi-organ system evaluation.

USMLE Preparation (6 Weeks)

Students are required to take and pass Step 1 of the USMLE prior to the start of 3rd year clerkships or within 8 weeks of completing Year 2 coursework if students are not immediately beginning clerkships. This applies to all students even if they are transitioning into dual degree program work or beginning a leave of absence.
