Research Offices & Policies

Office of Research Affairs (ORA)

The ORA supports UMSOM research by providing guidance on research conduct and compliance, conflicts of interest, foreign influences, required training, training grants, and data protection, management and sharing. The ORA serves as a research hub to assist faculty in expanding collaborative, innovative research that will lead to an increased number of novel competitive grant applications to a variety of funding agencies. ORA staff provide a wide range of services to SOM faculty, including reviewing and managing the pre-award process; streamlining the grant application and regulatory compliance processes; identifying and notifying departments and faculty members about funding opportunities; assisting with limited grant submissions and university funded award programs; and providing assistance in acquiring letters of support, assembling and proofreading proposals for large/complex, multi-PI grant applications.

Human Research Protections Office (HRPO)

HRPO helps investigators design, write, and organize research protocols; maintain compliance with UMB, IRB, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations; create and submit IRB applications via CICERO; and ensure the protection of human research participants. Human Research Protections is a comprehensive program that affords protections for all human research participants.

Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)

The use of animals in research, teaching or other activities at the University of Maryland Baltimore must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC. The IACUC is responsible for assuring that all animal use complies with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and all other applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.

International Operations (IO)

IO supports the UMB community to engage internationally in education, research, and service. Through the Global Hub, IO provides specialized services to UMB units in support of international travel, safety and security, procurement, finance, human resources, compliance, and other operational areas. IO and the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) are partners in the Global Hub and work together to ensure seamless support of UMB’s global activities. International Operations is here to serve you!
