Join Us at Our Next CARTI Connect!
May 30, 2025
To help support the UMSOM strategic goals, this spring CARTI launched a new event to facilitate networking among research faculty members. The inaugural CARTI Connect was held April 2nd in the SMC student center, attracted an energetic group, and involved ice-breakers and chocolate.
The UMSOM strategic plan research goal #2 aims to create a broad collaborative culture to encourage new research endeavors and entrepreneurship. "As a center, we assist everyone who seeks our services in connecting with mentors, colleagues, and others around the school," says Marey Shriver, CARTI Executive Director for Faculty Development. "CARTI Connect is an extension of our services--we want to help people connect, learn about each other's research, and maybe spark new ideas for collaboration."
Survey results of CARTI Connect attendees found the event to be overwhelmingly good or excellent. At least half surveyed finding the event to be useful, with one person saying that "finding out what other research is going on at UMB may have applications to my own research," and another said, that despite it being a relatively small event, "I was able to connect with someone with overlapping research interests." The majority of those who responded to the post-event survey plan to follow up with their new contacts.
Networking--some may see it as difficult, uncomfortable, and time-consuming--is a necessity in today's world. While extroverts who thrive on social interaction may not think twice about attending a networking opportunity, introverts can find the whole experience off-putting. However, an aversion toward networking can be overcome and can lead to fruitful new professional relationships, research collaborations, and even advancement.
CARTI offers some tips for overcoming barriers to successful networking
1. Approach it as any other learning experience. As you would likely attend a seminar to sit and passively listen, think about networking events as casual learning opportunities.
2. Find common interests. It always helps to have allies and connecting with others who have common interests can increase the positive energy in your realm.
3. Consider yourself an asset. Think about your skill set and what you can offer to others. It isn't always about the research, maybe you could help mentor a trainee, or read/critique draft manuscripts, and likewise others may be willing to reciprocate.
4. Practice! Use these CARTI Connect opportunities to practice your networking skills for national meetings and other professional events.
We plan to host several CARTI Connect events throughout each academic year. Our next CARTI Connect is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 25th at 1pm. Keep an eye out for details later in the summer. See you soon!
