Biosketch
Dr. Kelby Kaplan is an Assistant Professor in the UMSOM Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science (PTRS), where she primarily teaches in the area of biomechanics, gait, orthopedic, and manual physical therapy. Her classrom and clinical instruction span the continuum of physical therapy education including professional doctoral students, practicing clinicians, and orthopedic residents, and she serves as a commmittee member for several PhD and EdD dissertations. She has over 20 years experience treating patients in the outpatient and acute care settings for orthopedic, vestibular, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
Dr. Kaplan is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic physical therapy and is hightly committed to the process of specialization, specifically the development, review, and revision of the board certification examination. She was appointed and served as an orthopedic item writer through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties for two years and was then appointed to the Committee of Content Experts as an item reviewer. In conjunction with this role, she is serving as a Subject Matter Expert for the revalization of the Description of Orthopedic Specialty Practice.
During her doctoral studies on curriculum and instruction, Dr. Kaplan's interest in cultural humility in healthcare education and practice was piqued, and has since become an keystone of her research beyond orthopedic physical therapy.
