On August 10, Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, and Esa Davis, MD, MPH, Associate Vice President for Community Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and Senior Associate Dean for Population and Community Medicine, took part in the annual Summers in the 7th Block Party at The Village at Mondawmin.
The event was organized by the nonprofit Baltimore CONNECT and featured giveaways of food, school supplies, musical entertainment and other activities for the community.
Dean Gladwin and Dr. Davis joined colleagues at the University of Maryland Faculty Physicians and the STAR TRACK Adolescent Health Program to help share important health information with the West Baltimore community and raise awareness of the new University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, “health village” that will be opening next summer.
The Village at Mondawmin is the future site of the new health village, a 17,000 square foot space that will bring medical, dental and ancillary services to the Mondawmin community.
Throughout the day, UM Faculty Physicians and STAR TRACK program staff provided attendees with information on UM healthcare services and gathered feedback on what community members would like to see offered at the health village. While the block party was underway, Vicki Tepper, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics at UMSOM who organized the mobile health van, happened to spot a child in need of medical attention. She helped the child and parents get to the STAR TRACK mobile health unit where Dean Gladwin and Dr. Davis provided treatment for heat exhaustion and assisted with emergency services.
