Ceremony Marks Next Phase of Medical Training

The Annual Student Clinician Ceremony was held today, to mark the Class of 2021 progression from basic sciences classroom instruction to their clinical years of medical education. The Class gathered in Davidge Hall, to hear inspirational messages from their mentors and revisit the Hippocratic Oath taken during the White Coat Ceremony.

“Never underestimate the impact you have as a third-year medical student on your patients,” said Stella Hines, MD, MSPH, Assistant Professor of Medicine, who was chosen by the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Gold Humanism Society to be this year’s keynote speaker.

In her captivating address, she recounted some of her experiences as a medical student and reminded the class that medicine is not just a skillset, but a genuine caring for patients. “Put down the paper, you know the information!” she declared. “Trust in your abilities and be fully engaged in the interactions with your patients. You will be present for some of the most joyful and most vulnerable moments of one’s life. Treat it as an honor and embrace all of what these experiences brings to you and others.”

Bowers Distinguished Professor, also addressed the students. "After two challenging years in the classroom, you will soon have the chance to employ the abilities you have acquired thus far,” he said. “You will experience a transition from the black and white world of your textbooks, to one of much more color and interest that you will find in your patients themselves.”

Students also received professionalism pins to wear on their white coats, which symbolizes their commitment to their patients and the profession.

This ceremony followed two days of practical skills sessions, small group discussions, and panel presentations pertaining to professional and ethical issues in patient care.
