The Maurice N. Reid, MD Collaborative Learning Space

August 26, 2020

Generously donated by University of Maryland School of Medicine graduate (class of 1999), Member of the School’s Board of Visitors, and CEO and Medical Director of ExpressCare Urgent Care Centers, we thank Maurice N. Reid, MD for his generous contribution of a new learning space.

This new learning center was designed with the University’s new Renaissance Curriculum in mind: a space where students and faculty can participate in a collaborative and dynamic learning environment. Changes in educational methods require reconfiguration of some of our teaching spaces and different IT needs. Updated classrooms may include anything from removable benches and tables to wireless screen sharing capabilities. Movable walls may also be utilized to combine smaller rooms into large ones—encouraging student collaboration and team building in classes of all sizes. The advanced technology in the new Collaborative Learning Space, combined with our illustrious faculty, will support team-based learning, and will broaden student accessibility, wellness, and mentorship initiatives.

Dr. Reid was instrumental in establishing The Maurice Reid, MD Classroom Fund, which provides support for renovation and maintenance of classrooms that promote team-based learning. He says, “I am impressed by what the School of Medicine is trying to accomplish, not only integrating the traditional pathology with the clinical medicine, but also expanding the teaching and classrooms to give students a more relaxed setting to study and learn. It is just so very innovative — I wish we could have had that opportunity when I was a student!”
