Biosketch

Anthony F. Lehman, M.D., M.S.P.H., is Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Much of his research has examined outcomes of persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses, in particular assessing quality of life. He has also studied the impacts of substance use disorders among person with mental illnesses on diagnosis and outcomes, the effectiveness of PACT programs for homeless persons with severe mental disorders, and the effectiveness of interventions for families.

In his current work, Dr. Lehman continues to study the quality of care for persons with schizophrenia. In addition to authoring over 150 scientific articles, Dr. Lehman is co-author of two books, Working with Families of the Mentally Ill and Double Jeopardy: Chronic Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders. He was Principal Investigator for the Schizophrenia Patient Outcomes Research Team, funded by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and the National Institute of Mental Health.

He was also Principal Investigator on the Maryland Employment Demonstration Project for Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities, funded by the Center for Mental Health Services, and Co-Principal Investigator on the NIMH funded Center for Research on Services for Severe Mental Illnesses and the Maryland Medicaid Patterns of Care and Outcomes Study, also funded by NIMH. He chaired the American Psychiatric Association’s Workgroup that is updating the APA Guidelines for the Treatment of Schizophrenia.
