Education and Training

Dr. Zhou received his Bachelor Degree of Medicine (in Dental Medicine, BM) and Master Degree of Medicine (in Pharmacology, MM) from the Central South University Xiang-Ya School of Medicine in China. He then received his Dr. rer.nat. (in Cell Biology) from the University of Rostock, Germany. He was a post-doctoral fellow and research associate at the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Zhou has been pursuing neuroscience research for  >20 years, mainly using patch clamp electrophysiological, optogentical, chemogenetical, immunohistological, molecular biological and stereotaxic techniques, to investigate the neuroelectrophysiology of different neuronal types in different brain regions (mainly olfactory bulb, cortex and basal ganglia), and the pathophysiology of these neurons in neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy), and has mainly examined neuronal intrinsic properties, chemical and electrical interconnection, synchronization of neuronal populations and synaptic plasticity.

Research/Clinical Keywords

olfactory bulb; local and centrifugal circuits; neural excitation in health and disease (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy); in vivo and in vitro neural electrophysiology; neuroanatomy with fiber photometry and multiphoton imaging
