Biosketch
Dr. Orwig is a gerontologist specializing in biobehavioral aspects of aging with extensive expertise in studying older adults, both in community and hospital settings. She is Director of the Baltimore Hip Studies (BHS), a research program dedicated to optimizing recovery from hip fracture and building a network of 29 hospitals in the greater Baltimore area, Washington D.C., and southern Pennsylvania. Dr. Orwig’s primary research expertise over 28 years is in the areas of hip fracture recovery, intervention trials, and longitudinal research methods including study design, recruitment and retention strategies, conducting performance measures, developing interventions to maximize recovery, and translating interventions into the community. She has led eight cohort studies including more than 4,000 hip fracture patients, and four randomized trials involving large interdisciplinary research teams. Dr. Orwig's leadership has established an infrastructure for producing significant manuscripts, collaborations with investigators both inside and outside the institution, sustaining a successful portfolio of NIA and PCORI funding, and training new scholars to be independent researchers. Many of the papers from the BHS serve as the impetus for recent intervention trials and current drug development in hip fracture patients. The BHS has gained an international reputation for its ability to successfully conduct research studies with frail older populations, and Dr. Orwig is often consulted for her expertise and collaboration from both academic institutions and drug companies.
Dr. Orwig’s second area of research expertise is in pharmacoepidemiology, particularly in medication management issues of older adults and improving treatment of osteoporosis after hip fracture. She developed an instrument, Medication Management Instrument for Deficiencies in the Elderly (MedMaIDE), to assess older adult’s ability to self-medicate safely in the community. This instrument is unique since it can be used by non-medically trained people (e.g., caregivers) to identify deficiencies of an older adult.
In addition to research activities, Dr. Orwig has been extensively involved in education and training. Dr. Orwig is Co-Director of the MS in Gerontology Program and she was also Co-director of the bi-campus Doctoral Program in Gerontology for 13 years. She currently serves as Co-PI of the NIA T32 training program in the Epidemiology of Aging. Mentoring and advising doctoral students (and students at all levels) is a large part of Dr. Orwig's academic career having chaired 18 dissertation committees and served as a member on 9 committees. She served as a mentor/advisor for 25 doctoral students, 6 post-doctoral fellows and 8 junior faculty, of whom 5 received minority supplements and 3 received research supplements to promote diversity in health-related research. These mentees come from numerous programs and schools across 2 campuses and Dr. Orwig has received three awards recognizing her mentoring.
