Biosketch

Dr. Rana Malek is a Professor of Medicine and a highly experienced endocrinologist who has held several clinical and medical education leadership roles.

She joined the faculty at the University of Medicine School of Medicine in 2011.  For 9 years, she served as the program director for the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship at University of Maryland.   In 2023, she was selected to be the Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education at UMMC Midtown Campus where she chairs the Institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee and provides oversight and compliance with ACGME requirements for the residency programs.

Dr. Malek is the Medical Director of the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology (UMCDE) at the UMMC Midtown Campus Outpatient Tower. The UMCDE provides integrated patient care for individuals with diabetes, allowing patients to see multiple care providers (endocrinology, podiatry, nephrology, registered diabetes educators) in the same clinical space.  With more than 20,000 patient visits/year, the UMCDE serves the local West Baltimore community as well as Maryland residents across the state drawn to the expertise provided by a tertiary academic medical center.

Dr. Malek’s clinical expertise is in women’s health, type 1 diabetes, and endocrine disorders in pregnancy.  Using her extensive clinical experience caring for individuals with type 1 diabetes, she is the co-medical director of the UMMC Type 1 Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic.  This unique interdisciplinary care model allows women to see endocrinology and Maternal Fetal Medicine in shared appointments to provide comprehensive glycemic management in pregnancy using state of the art diabetes technology.

In addition, Dr. Malek is known for her clinical work in polycystic ovarian syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, primary ovarian insufficiency, and post- menopausal hormone replacement therapy.  

Dr. Malek has been recognized as one of the Baltimore Top Doctors in diabetes and endocrine care for 5 years.  She is a sought after speaker and podcast guest due to her skills explaining complex endocrine conditions to both medical providers and patients.  She is the recipient of several local and national teaching awards.
