Biosketch

Roberto F. Machado, MD, is the Theodore E. Woodward Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  Dr. Machado also serves as Physician-in-Chief at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Machado is an internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He previously served as the Dr. Calvin H. English Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Occupational Medicine at Indiana University. His clinical and research expertise centers on pulmonary vascular diseases, particularly pulmonary hypertension and the pulmonary complications of sickle cell disease.

Dr. Machado earned his medical degree from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He pursued advanced fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he later served as a staff clinician and investigator.

Throughout his career, Dr. Machado has held academic appointments at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he directed both the Pulmonary Hypertension Program and the Outpatient Program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He has received numerous honors, including election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha.

Dr. Machado’s research has significantly advanced the understanding of pulmonary hypertension in hemolytic disorders. His work has led to the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications and multiple NIH-funded research projects. He is a frequently invited speaker at national and international conferences and serves on editorial boards for leading journals in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
