Dr. Ana Lía Graciano is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director of Critical Care Research in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. Dr. Graciano received her medical degree from the National University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. After her initial medical education in her home country, she was a Research Fellow in the Pediatric Surgical Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a visiting fellow in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at Harvard. She completed her Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she was Chief Fellow.
Before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland, Dr. Graciano was the Academic Division Chief for Pediatric Critical Care at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Fresno Medical Education Program, and an attending physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Units at Valley Children’s Hospital (VCH) in Madera, California. During her tenure there, she held multiple leadership roles locally, regionally, and nationally and played a key role in developing and expanding the education and clinical research programs in critical care.
Dr. Graciano has a track record of multidisciplinary mentorship and collaboration with colleagues in the United States and internationally, with a focus on advancing pediatric critical care in underserved regions. She has been a member of the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators since its inception in 2002 and co-authored the 2017 American College of Critical Care Medicine Pediatric Sepsis Guidelines. Her work has contributed significantly to initiatives improving the recognition and care of pediatric sepsis, particularly in Hispanic populations. Her expertise spans pediatric cardiac critical care, sepsis, and global health.
Since 2020, she has been a member of the Overcoming COVID-19 Investigators, a research consortium devoted to understanding the mechanisms and management of SARS-CoV-2 in children and young adults, and has lectured extensively on the impact of COVID-19 in children. In recognition of her leadership and community outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was invited to the White House Celebration honoring front-line providers.
Dr. Graciano is an active member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), where she holds several leadership roles and is actively involved in the development and implementation of educational programs nationally and internationally. She’s the Chair of the Pediatric Multidisciplinary Critical Care Review Course, Vice-Chair of Education for the Discovery Investigators Network, and a member of the Immigrant Critical Care Professional Task Force, a one-of-a-kind program aiming to mentor first non-US-born critical care professionals.
She’s the recipient of multiple awards, including the SCCM Annual Scientific Award and several Presidential Citations recognizing her contributions to clinical care, mentorship, and the advancement of pediatric critical care. She was inducted into the American College of Critical Care Medicine, becoming the first pediatric intensivist from California's San Joaquin Central Valley to receive this honor.
Dr. Graciano is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Critical Care Medicine and serves on the Board of Regents of the College.
