Biosketch
Dr. Rozalina McCoy is Associate Professor and Associate Division Chief for Clinical Research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition, Department of Medicine; the Director of the Precision Medicine and Population Health in the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC); the Director of Research in the University of Maryland School of Medicine Rural-MD Program; and the co-Director of the Center for Seniors Uniting Nationwide to Support Health, INtegrated care, and Economics (SUNSHINE), a NIA-funded P30 Center for the Demography and Economics of Aging.
Dr. McCoy is a practicing endocrinologist, clinician educator, and physician scientist who - through clinical care, research, education, and advocacy - is dedicated to improving the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of diabetes care. She is particularly interested in understanding and addressing the multi-level factors that lead to suboptimal care and poor health with the goal of developing precision medicine tools and patient-centered care delivery models that improve health and wellbeing, while supporting the sustainability of the healthcare system. Dr. McCoy’s methodologic expertise is in the use of real-world data, including administrative claims and electronic health record data, for causal inference, health economics and outcomes, pharmacoepidemiologic, and population health research. Her work is supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the American Diabetes Association.
Dr. McCoy has published >290 peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to the development and dissemination of clinical guidelines and consensus statements on the management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Heart Association (AHA). She serves as co-chair of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Professional Practice Committee and sits on the ADA Science & Health Care Executive Council.
Dr. McCoy is passionate about caring for patients and serving her community, training the next generation of clinicians and applied researchers, and driving practice transformation to achieve better health outcomes with greater efficiency and lower cost. During her time at Mayo Clinic (2015-2023), she led multiple efforts to improve care delivery through team-based primary care and community paramedicine. Dr. McCoy joined the University of Maryland family in 2023 and is excited to work with faculty, students, and staff across the University of Maryland Baltimore, University of Maryland College Park (where she has an adjunct faculty position in the Department of Health Policy and Management of the University of Maryland School of Public Health), the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), and communities across Maryland to improve health through research, practice transformation, service, and education.

Research Interests
I am an endocrinologist, internist, and health services researcher with a passion for improving the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of medical care for people living with diabetes and other chronic conditions, particularly those with clinical complexity. Broadly, my work relies on using real-world data (e.g., claims, electronic health records [EHR], social media) and a wide range of observational (e.g., epidemiologic, causal inference, econometric, geospatial), artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), interventional (e.g., pragmatic trials), and mixed methods designs to 1) characterize, identify, and predict high-risk subgroups; 2) identify treatment strategies that optimize health outcomes with least burden of treatment, harm, and cost; 3) operationalize sustainable delivery of high-quality person-centered care in clinical and community settings; and 4) facilitate patient/stakeholder engagement in research.
My recent work has focused on 1) epidemiology and prediction of acute and chronic diabetes complications; 2) impacts of social determinants of health on care delivery, quality, and outcomes; 3) emulating comparative effectiveness trials of diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis therapies; 4) primary care, organizational, and payment models associated with optimal diabetes care and outcomes; and 5) design, implementation, and evaluation of novel care models for high-risk patients, such as mobile integrated health, comprehensive and team-based primary care, and transitional care programs.
