Resident/Medical Students Electives

The University of Maryland Medical Center Division of Nephrology is committed to the teaching of young physicians and medical students.

We also recognize that Nephrology is undergoing sub-specialization and rapid changes as a specialty in today’s dynamic medical landscape.

As a part of our efforts to increase and streamline nephrology education, we are offering the following three electives:

General Nephrology

A two- to four-week rotation on the inpatient consult service, covering various aspects of AKI, ESRD and encompassing kidney pathology with diseases like GN and vasculitis. This is the basic Nephrology thinking and problem-solving elective. The elective in General Nephrology can be chosen by the student/ resident to be either at the VA medical center or at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Transplant Nephrology

A two- to four-week elective including rounds on post-transplant patients with the transplant team. The residents / medical students will have a chance of directly seeing and treating patients with acute and chronic rejection, observe plasma exchange as a therapy, and observe the transplant surgery with the surgeons in the OR.

Critical Care Nephrology

A two- to four-week elective with rounds with the ICU Nephrology team. This rotation will cover acute care nephrology patients and hands-on experience with different aspects of critical care nephrology.

  • Two electives can be combined for two weeks each, for a total of four weeks.
  • We look forward to your participation and would strongly encourage interested residents/medical students to join our team for an exciting learning experience.
