Actical WatchDear Parents and Guardians,

Hello from Project CHAMP! This is a reminder that your child will be coming home today with an Actical on their ankle. An Actical is like a pedometer — it measures physical activity by sensing your child’s motion. We’re asking you to allow your preschooler to wear an Acticals so that we can get a better sense of your child’s physical activity throughout the week. Included below is important information for this week, but please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions.

  • How long do we have to wear it?
We ask your child to wear the Actical for 1 week.  We will take them off at your child’s childcare center in one week’s time.
  • Why is it on a non-removable band?
Acticals contain important information, we want to make sure that they are positioned properly on your ankle and will not fall off. The University has graciously lent us a limited supply of Acticals so it is very important we get them back. We only have a few to continue our program and we need to return them to the University once our program is complete.
  • When can it be worn?
The Actical can be worn throughout all activities.  It is waterproof, so it can be worn during activities like showering, bathing, and swimming.
  • Will you be able to locate where I am wearing the Actical?
The Actical does not contain a GPS or locating system. Its only purpose is to measure your physical activity.
  • Can I see my child's activity?
Yes, after we collect the Acticals from your Childcare Center you can contact us at rarbaiza@peds.umaryland.edu for information on your child's activity.
  • Who can I contact with questions?
You can call our office at 410-706-2136 or CHAMP@peds.umaryland.edu for answers to your questions about the Actical.
