PhD in Epidemiology and Human Genetics, Molecular Epidemiology Track

Miriam Laufer, MD, MPH

Brief Summary of Research Project:

I am a PhD student studying molecular epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Human Genetics here at UMB. I am interested in understanding how age influences production and survival of sexual stages (gametocytes) of Plasmodium falciparum in the human host. Answers from this important question will help in identifying age groups with a higher probability of transmitting malaria parasites to mosquitoes. This knowledge can contribute to the efforts of designing measures to prevent the transmission of the malaria parasite from humans to mosquitoes.
