In recent years, support for biomedical research from traditional sources has stagnated, and in some cases decreased. Private philanthropy, from individuals and foundations, can be an alternative source of funds. Understanding the methodology used by development officers to develop relationships and solicit private gifts and grants, can lead to new opportunities to advance biomedical research. This session will help dispel some of the common misconceptions about private philanthropy and provide new resources for research support. In addition, this seminar will address how University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers can work with the Office of Development while pursuing foundation funding.

NIH Grant Writing: Things I wish I’d known when I was a junior faculty member

Recurs every Never until Thursday, October 13, 2016
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
660 Redwood St., Howard Hall, Room 450
Speaker: Christy Chang, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, UMSOM
Dr. Chang is the recipient of several NIH R01 awards for her work on the genetics of complex disorders. Dr. Chang has also served as an NIH reviewer as well as a grant writing coach within National Research Mentoring Network. Dr. Chang combines these two perspectives to give junior faculty insights into how to write a competitive grant application. In the current funding climate, when rates are low, it is crucial to develop an application that does more than present the facts. Thus, Dr. Chang goes beyond the basics of presenting data to providing a scientific story based on the data. The ability to get reviewers interested in your scientific story is the key to a fundable grant.
