Ariel Cohen, MD (he/him), is a board‑certified obstetrician‑gynecologist with advanced fellowship training in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. He is the first Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist at the University of Maryland Medical System, where he provides subspecialty care for children and adolescents. In addition to his pediatric and adolescent practice, Dr. Cohen cares for patients of all ages with the general obstetrics and gynecology division.
Dr. Cohen’s clinical and academic work focuses on menstrual disorders, endometriosis, differences in sex development (DSD), and gender‑affirming gynecologic care for transgender and gender‑diverse youth. He is particularly interested in caring for gender-diverse youth and providing care in a multidisciplinary team for youth with complex medical needs. He is committed to improving equitable access to subspecialty gynecologic care for historically underserved adolescent populations.
After graduating magna cum laude from Muhlenberg College, Dr. Cohen was a middle school teacher through Teach For America in Philadelphia, which drove his interest in caring for youth. While teaching, he completed a Master of Science in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He then moved to New Orleans to study medicine at Tulane University. Dr. Cohen completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, followed by fellowship training in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at the National Institutes of Health and Children’s National Hospital.
He is board‑certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds a Focused Practice Designation in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Cohen served as Lead for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, where he developed and expanded a regional referral program emphasizing standardized access pathways and inclusive care delivery.
Dr. Cohen is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG). He serves on national committees and acts as an ad hoc peer reviewer for several leading journals, including Obstetrics & Gynecology, Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, and Journal of Adolescent Health.
